When visiting South Africa one will find that the food is as cosmopolitan and, in general, as basic as one would find anywhere else in the world, catering for all tastes. For your interest, though, we have listed some of the traditional foods in the country.

What it is

Amasi Traditional African sour milk
Biltong Salty dried meat - similar to jerky (a big favourite in South Africa)
Bobotie Spicy minced meat, chopped onions and milk-soaked bread topped with eggs. Often served with rice and garnished with dried fruit, walnuts, chutney and sliced banana
Boerewors Spiced meat sausage, preferably braaied (barbequed) on an open flame
Bunny Chow Stew, usually curry, stuffed into a hollowed-out loaf of bread
Chutney Sweet & spicy sauce made from fruit. Mrs Ball's Chutney is a household name
Droewors Dried boerewors (similar to Biltong)
Frikkadelle Meatball
Gesmoorde Vis Salted cod, often served with potatoes, tomatoes and apricot jam
Half Smiley Half a sheep's head
Heerlike Poeding A 'heerlike' (divine) sweet, with a touch of vinegar, spongy, flour based pudding served with a hot sweet sauce
Hoenderpastei Traditional Afrikaans chicken pie
Isidudu Pumpkin pap (porridge)
Koeksisters Twisted deep fried, very sweet pastries. Cape Flats Koeksisters are egg shaped, sweet and spicy
Malva Pudding Sweet spongy, flour based, Apricot pudding
Mashonzha Traditional African Mopane worm delicacy
Melktert South African milk tart
Melkkos Milk Based dessert, sometimes slightly burned
Mealie-bread Sweet bread baked with sweetcorn
Mielie-meal (pap) South Africa's staple food. Can be eaten as a breakfast porridge or topped with various spicy gravies and served alongside meat
   
   
   
Naartjie Tangerine, mandarin
Ostrich Can be stewed, grilled or eaten as Biltong. It's growing in popularity due to it's high protein and low cholesterol content
Pampoenkoekies Pumpkin fritters
Pap & Vleis A staple and nutritious South African food of 'stywe' (stiff) pap, served with red meat (or chicken), gravy/sauces or topped with various stews
Patatrolle A variety of baked dishes where flour is replaced or supplemented with pumpkin or sweet potato
Potbrood Savoury bread baked over coals in a cast iron pot
Potjiekos Traditional South African stew made with meat and vegetables and cooked over coals in a cast iron pot
Rusks Hard, dry, tasty bread, can be eaten as is but is usually dunked into tea or coffee and then eaten. Ouma Rusks are a household name
Samoosa A fried, savoury, usually spicy, triangle shaped Indian pastry with various fillings of meat, vegetables and cheese
Slap Chips Sloppy potato chips (fries) with lots of salt and vinegar
Sosaties Skewered meat (Kebab, Souvlaki) usually done on an open flame
Tomato Bredie Delicious tender Lamb and tomato stew
Umqombothi Beer made from fermented wheat
Umvubo Traditional Xhosa dish of sour milk mixed with dry pap
Umngqusho A dish made from semolina and black-eyed peas
Vetkoek Deep-fried dough balls, either filled with minced meat or served with jam
Walkie Talkie Chicken feet and head
Waterblommetjie Bredie Meat stewed with the Cape Pondweed flower
